Kinnaur valley at the bottom is so narrow that there’s only room for the main road and the Sutlej, the mighty Himalayan river that flows with immense power towards Pakistan. Time to send this timeline back to India. Shimla was the first stop in the mountains, after the slow train climb from the plains of Punjab, but was mostly a gateway to one of the trip’s main goals: the Spiti valley. I have fond memories of Shimla, the mountain station created so that the British could escape the heatwaves of Delhi. It’s another unusual city that doesn’t fit in India, a bit like Chandigarh, a city literally in the clouds. And if that one was planned by a French architect, Shimla was created by a Scottish man who felt like at home, and I guess that says it all.
